About Carbon Counters

Why is this initiative needed?

Currently, consumers in Australia lack access to clear information regarding the carbon emissions associated with the products they purchase, specifically clothing and textile products. The voluntary nature of sustainability certifications such as Ethical Clothing Australia and the Australian Certified Organic label, limits the availability of comprehensive environmental data. This lack of transparency undermines efforts to reduce carbon footprints at the consumer level. A legislated carbon labelling system would bridge this gap by offering consumers quantifiable information on the environmental impact of their purchases.

The need for carbon labelling is further underscored by global examples. Switzerland has demonstrated that carbon labelling can effectively influence consumer behaviour toward more sustainable choices. The Swiss Traffic Light Label (TLL), which categorises products by low, medium, or high emissions, has proven to be an effective visual tool in driving consumer choices toward low-emission products. This success highlights the feasibility of implementing similar measures in Australia.

Our Campaign

A campaign to introduce mandatory carbon emission labelling for clothing and textile products imported into and made in Australia. The policy aims to increase consumer awareness of the environmental impact of their purchases by requiring fashion companies to disclose their carbon emissions, and to encourage companies to adopt greener production methods.
